Manufacturer description

This four wheeled coach is a representation of the many which served on the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Four wheeled coaches proved especially good at branch line work where their small size enabled the traversing of tight radius curves, whilst lower passenger numbers meant their small size was more acceptable and enabled trains to be hauled by smaller engines.

This GNR coach is modelled as having step boards to enable access at stations with low platforms and gas lighting.

Hornby GNR 4‑wheel coach, model number 1534, is an OO gauge replica of a Great Northern Railway first‑class carriage dating from the pre‑grouping era. The model is finished in pristine brown livery, measures 135 mm long and is designed to run on a minimum radius of 438 mm (2nd radius). It carries no power pickup and uses NEM tension‑lock couplings.

The coach is based on the GNR design for four‑wheel stock, which was commonly employed on branch lines where tight curves and lower passenger numbers required a compact carriage that could be hauled by smaller locomotives. The model features step boards for boarding from low platforms and is equipped with gas‑lighting detail.

Key specifications: gauge OO, colour brown, length 135 mm, finish pristine, running number 1534, livery Great Northern Railway, power pickup none, coupling NEM/Tension lock, operator GNR, coach type Great Northern Railway 4‑wheel, designer GNR, manufacturer part number R40057.
