Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

The Heljan Class 44 BR Blue 44002 Helvellyn Full Yellow Ends Diesel Locomotive is a new model in the OO gauge format. It is part of a range of models representing British Rail's Class 44 'Peak' diesel locomotives. These locomotives were among the first of BR's big diesel engines and were known for their distinctive names.
The model offers a high level of detail and accuracy, including an all-new body tooling, bespoke bogie and underframe parts, and detailed cab interiors. It is available in various forms, including bodies with original boiler water tanks and later versions without tanks, as well as different options for boiler filler hatches and steps.
The model features a range of premium specifications, including a 21-pin DCC decoder interface, factory-fitted speakers for DCC sound conversion, and six separately switchable light functions. It also has a powerful, smooth-running chassis with a centrally mounted motor and twin flywheels. Other features include etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers, separate headcode discs, and extensive bufferbeam detail.
