Prototype Era
Era 5 (1956 to 1966) British Railways Late Crest
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan Class 44 ‘Snowdon’ is a 00 gauge model of the British Railways Type‑4 diesel locomotive, rendered in BR green with the late crest. It represents the D9 variant with small yellow panels and slotted grilles, and carries the manufacturer part number 4401.
The locomotive is fitted with a 21‑pin DCC decoder (DCC 21) and includes factory‑installed speakers for plug‑and‑play DCC sound. Six separately switchable lighting functions are provided, and the chassis uses a centrally mounted motor with twin flywheels for smooth, powerful running.
Construction features new body tooling, bespoke bogie and underframe components, and a detailed cab interior. The model is offered in the major Class 44 variations, including options with or without boiler water tanks, plated or open boiler filler hatches, and the experimental slotted grilles of D9/D10.
Standard premium features comprise high‑quality design and construction, etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers, separate headcode discs, extensive buffer‑beam detail, and an elegant finish throughout.
