Prototype Era
Era 5 (1956 to 1966) British Railways Late Crest
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan Class 44 ‘Snowdon’ in BR green with late crest livery is an OO gauge model of the British Rail Sulzer Type 4 diesel locomotive. The model represents the D9 variant with small yellow panels and slotted grilles, and is supplied with factory‑fitted DCC sound capability.
The locomotive includes interior lighting and six separately switchable light functions. It is equipped with a 21‑pin DCC decoder, factory fitted speakers for plug‑and‑play sound, and a powerful chassis featuring a centrally mounted motor with twin flywheels. Additional standard features are sprung buffers, NEM couplers, separate headcode discs, etched grilles and extensive buffer‑beam detail.
Heljan offers versions with the original boiler water tanks as well as later forms without tanks, and options for plated or open boiler filler hatches and steps. The model is intended to represent the British Railways late‑crest period of the Class 44 fleet.
