Prototype Era
Era 6 (1967 to 1972) British Rail Blue (Pre-TOPS)
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan has announced a new OO gauge model of the BR Class 44 'Peak' locomotive. This model represents the locomotives from the early days of British Rail's diesel fleet, specifically the ten Pilot Scheme locomotives which were introduced in the late 1950s. The model will feature a range of variations, including different body styles, grilles and other details.
The model will be the first to cover all the major Class 44 variations, including those with slotted grilles, and will feature an all-new body tooling, bespoke bogie and underframe parts, and detailed cab interiors. It will also include a 21-pin DCC decoder interface and factory-fitted speakers for DCC sound conversion.
The model will come with a range of premium features, including six separately switchable lighting functions, factory-fitted speakers and a powerful motor with twin flywheels. Other features include etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers and separate headcode discs. The model will be available in a BR green livery with yellow ends, in the style of the pre-TOPS era, with the option to model the locomotive with a full or open boiler filler hatch.
