Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan Class 44 BR Blue 44010 is a 00 gauge die‑cast diesel locomotive model representing the British Rail “Peak” Type 4, painted in the original BR blue livery. It carries the manufacturer part number 4404 and is equipped with a 21‑pin DCC decoder (DCC 21) and factory‑fitted speakers for plug‑and‑play DCC sound.
The model includes interior lighting and is offered in several historical variations, such as original boiler water tanks versus later tank‑less bodies, plated or open boiler filler hatches, and the experimental slotted grilles fitted to D9/D10 locomotives. Detailed cab interiors, etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers and separate headcode discs are provided as standard.
Standard features comprise six separately switchable lighting functions, a powerful centrally mounted motor with twin flywheels, and extensive underframe and bogie detail. The chassis is designed for smooth, reliable running and the model is supplied ready for immediate DCC operation.
