The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.

It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.

The Heljan Class 44 ‘Scafell Pike’ is an OO‑scale model of a British Rail diesel locomotive in the original BR blue livery, representing the pre‑TOPS period. It carries the manufacturer part number 4402 and includes a 21‑pin DCC decoder, factory‑fitted speakers for plug‑and‑play sound, six separately switchable lighting functions, and a detailed cab interior. The model is available in several historic variations, including original boiler water tanks, later versions without tanks, plated or open boiler filler hatches and steps, and the experimental slotted grilles used on D9/D10 subclasses.

The chassis features a centrally mounted motor with twin flywheels for smooth running, etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers and separate headcode discs.
