Prototype Era
Era 6 (1967 to 1972) British Rail Blue (Pre-TOPS)
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan Class 44 ‘Cross Fell’ BR Economy Green D5 (Small Yellow Panels) Diesel Locomotive – DCC Sound is a 4 mm scale model of a British Rail Class 44 diesel locomotive. The model is presented in BR green livery with the late crest, carries the manufacturer part number 44033 and is described as representing the British Rail Blue (Pre‑TOPS) period.
The locomotive includes a 21‑pin DCC decoder interface, factory‑fitted speakers for plug‑and‑play DCC sound, six separately switchable lighting functions and interior lighting. It is built on a chassis with a centrally mounted motor and twin flywheels, and features etched slotted grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers and separate headcode discs. Detailed cab interiors, extensive buffer‑beam decoration and options for original boiler water tanks, later tank‑less bodies, plated or open boiler filler hatches and steps are provided across the range.
