Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan Class 44 “Peak” (model number 44010) is a 00‑scale die‑cast model of the British Rail Type 4 diesel locomotive, presented in the original BR blue livery. The model carries the TOPS designation Class 44 and represents the period when the locomotives were painted in BR blue. It is supplied with the manufacturer part number 44043.
The locomotive is fitted with a 21‑pin DCC decoder and factory‑installed speakers, providing plug‑and‑play DCC sound capability. Six separately switchable lighting functions are included, together with interior illumination that highlights the detailed cab. The chassis is powered by a centrally mounted motor coupled to twin flywheels, offering smooth running performance.
Heljan has produced new body tooling for this model, allowing representation of all major Class 44 variations, including the experimental slotted grilles seen on D9/D10, original boiler water tanks, and both plated and open boiler filler hatches and steps. Additional standard features comprise etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers, separate headcode discs and extensive buffer‑beam detail.
