Prototype Era
Era 6 (1967 to 1972) British Rail Blue (Pre-TOPS)
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan Class 44 ‘Cross Fell’ BR Economy Green D5 (Small Yellow Panels) Diesel Locomotive is a 4 mm (OO gauge) model representing the early British Rail “Peak” Type 4 diesel, in the British Rail green livery with the late crest. The model is fitted with interior lighting and a 21‑pin DCC decoder (DCC 21) and carries the manufacturer part number 4403. It depicts the period of British Rail Blue (pre‑TOPS).
The kit includes a newly‑toolled body, bespoke bogie and underframe components, and detailed cab interiors. Variants are provided for both the original boiler water‑tank configuration and the later version without tanks, as well as options for plated or open boiler filler hatches, filler access steps and the experimental slotted grilles seen on D9/D10 locomotives.
Standard premium features comprise six separately switchable lighting functions, factory‑fitted speakers and DCC sound option, a powerful centrally mounted motor with twin flywheels, etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers, separate headcode discs, extensive buffer‑beam detailing and high‑quality decoration throughout.
