Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

The Heljan Class 44 BR green D4/44004 Great Gable model is a new release from the company, featuring a high specification and accurate detailing. This model represents the Class 44 'Peak' locomotive, which was part of the BR/Sulzer Type 4 story. The Class 44 was a significant diesel locomotive for British Rail, with ten Pilot Scheme locomotives being among the first of their kind.
The model will feature various variations, including bodies with and without boiler water tanks, plated or open boiler filler hatches, and slotted grilles on the D9/D10 variants. The model will also have a 21-pin DCC decoder interface for easy sound conversion, as well as factory-fitted speakers, six separately switchable light functions, and a powerful and smooth-running chassis with a centrally mounted motor and twin flywheels.
Key features of the model include high-quality design and construction, detailed cab interiors, and extensive bufferbeam detail. The model also includes etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers, separate headcode discs, and exquisite detail and decoration. The model is designed to be a high-end offering, with a focus on accuracy and realism.
