Prototype Era
Era 6 (1967 to 1972) British Rail Blue (Pre-TOPS)
The British Rail Class 44, also known as the "Peak" (the first of three related classes), is a legendary heavy freight and passenger locomotive. In the world of Heljan, the Class 44 is one of their most celebrated OO Gauge models because it perfectly aligns with Heljan’s reputation for "heavyweight" engineering.
It is a "beast" on the tracks, much like its real-life counterpart.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

The Heljan Class 44 model in BR Blue livery, number 44002 Helvellyn, is a highly detailed representation of the original Class 44 'Peak' locomotives. These diesel locomotives were part of BR's Pilot Scheme and played a significant role in the development of the BR/Sulzer Type 4 fleet.
This model is the first in the range to cover all major variations of the Class 44, including the experimental slotted grilles found on D9/D10 locomotives. The model features an all-new body tooling, bespoke bogie and underframe parts, detailed cab interiors, and more.
Key features of the model include a 21-pin DCC decoder interface, factory-fitted speakers for DCC sound conversion, six separately switchable light functions, and a powerful, smooth-running chassis with a centrally-mounted motor and twin flywheels.
The model includes a range of premium features as standard, including high-quality design and construction, separately switchable lighting functions, detailed cab interiors, factory-fitted speakers, and a 21-pin DCC interface. Other features include etched grilles, sprung buffers, NEM couplers, separate headcode discs, extensive bufferbeam detail, and exquisite detail and decoration.
The model is available in BR Blue livery, representing the British Rail Blue era preceding the TOPS system.
