The Bachmann Class 04 shunter, running number D2223, is an OO gauge model measuring 108 mm in length. It is constructed from plastic and metal components and rides on NEM‑type tension‑lock couplings. The model is based on the British Rail Class 04 diesel‑mechanical 0‑6‑0 shunter that was built between 1948 and 1962, with the prototype entering service in 1952. The tooling dates from 1997 and the locomotive can negotiate a minimum radius of 371 mm.

In prototype form the Class 04 was employed by British Rail and various industrial operators such as the Central Electricity Generating Board and the National Coal Board for shunting duties. A total of 144 were built, of which 142 entered BR service, and they were withdrawn by 1971.
