Manufacturer description

31138 BR blue
Just 20 of the production build of 243 Brush Type 2s retained the disc headcode arrangement and cab roof-mounted horn enclosure making them externally very similar to the pilot scheme ‘Toffee Apples’, although without the distinctively-shaped power handle that gave the latter their nickname. Our chosen example is BR Blue 31138, an incredible survivor, which was the last unrefurbished ‘skinhead’ to remain in traffic. The former D5556 of October 1959 just fell short of its 30th birthday after being withdrawn from Crewe Diesel in February 1989. Even more incredibly, after having its front connecting doors sealed in the late 1970s, it retained the same basic appearance for its last 11 years in traffic, albeit with the addition of an orange cantrail stripe and departmental LMR branding in its final months. This period covered a diverse range of allocations to the Class 31 hotspots of Bescot, Cricklewood, Immingham and Stratford. Despite losing its front doors, like the majority of its colleagues it did keep the outer pair of indicator discs retaining that visual connection to the steam era train identification system. Typical on parcels, departmental workings and freight as well as a diverse range of passenger operations including DMU substitutions and the famous Table 18 services between Birmingham New Street and Norwich/East Anglia, it was finally cut up at MC Metals, Glasgow, in January 1990.

Accurascale Class 31 31138 BR Blue ‘Skinhead’ Diesel Locomotive – DCC Sound is a highly detailed OO gauge model in 1:76.2 scale. The locomotive operates with DCC sound and includes interior lighting. It is supplied as part ACC3382‑DCC and represents the British Rail Blue livery as used under TOPS.

The prototype modelled is 31138, a former D5556 built in October 1959. It was the last unrefurbished ‘skinhead’ to remain in traffic, withdrawn from Crewe Diesel in February 1989 and scrapped at MC Metals, Glasgow, in January 1990. During its final years it retained sealed front doors, an orange cantrail stripe and LMR departmental branding, and operated from depots such as Bescot, Cricklewood, Immingham and Stratford on a variety of freight, parcels, departmental and passenger duties.

Only twenty of the production run of 243 Brush Type 2 locomotives kept the disc headcode arrangement and cab‑roof mounted horn enclosure, making this model externally similar to the pilot scheme “Toffee Apples”. It also retains the outer pair of indicator discs, preserving the visual link to the steam‑era train identification system.

Common features of the model include a heavy die‑cast metal chassis, separate footsteps, brake cylinders, speed recorder and end‑brake rigging, RP25‑110 profile wheels and brake blocks aligned with the wheels, scale‑width wire handrails, etched metal and plastic detail parts such as grab handles, steps, wipers and roof grille, pre‑painted nameplates, accurate miniature snowploughs, full under‑body battery box and air‑tank detail with pipework, fully sprung buffers, multiple pipework variations and screw couplings, and kinetic NEM‑coupler mounts with mini‑tension‑lock couplers. The minimum curve radius is 438 mm (second radius set‑track).
