Rapido Trains UK has announced a new OO gauge model of the Highland Railway Loch Class 4-4-0 locomotive, available in a range of liveries. The model represents the Dübs & Co. built locos and will feature various detailing variants, including different chimneys, domes, and safety valves.

The Highland Railway Loch Class 4-4-0 was a design by David Jones, Locomotive Superintendent, which was intended to provide a powerful and reliable passenger locomotive for the Inverness to Perth line and the new direct line via Aviemore. The class of 18 locos was built between 1896 and 1897, with three additional locos being built by The North British Locomotive Company during World War One.

The models will be available in various liveries, including pre-grouping, post-grouping, and a 'What if' Highland Railway Yellow livery. The Highland Railway Society has been involved in the development of the model, providing research materials and advice. The models will feature a smooth-running mechanism, factory-installed speakers, NEM coupler pockets, and a 21-pin DCC decoder socket.

The locomotive was a significant improvement over the Strath Class, with increased cylinder size and boiler barrel length resulting in 17,070 lbs of tractive effort. The class was later superseded by the Castle Class, but many of the Lochs remained in service until their eventual withdrawal in the 1950s.
