The Rapido Trains UK OO Gauge Highland Railway Loch Class 4-4-0 range is a new series of model locomotives based on the Highland Railway's locomotives that entered service in the late 19th century. The class, designed by David Jones, was built to haul passenger trains over the undulating terrain of the Inverness to Perth line and the new direct line via Aviemore. Fifteen locomotives were built by Dübs & Co. in 1896-1897, with a further three being constructed by the North British Locomotive Company in 1917.
The Loch Class locomotives were powered by a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement and featured a tall louvred chimney, long smokebox door straps, and smokebox wing plates. They were known for their reliability and were used on various routes and services across the Highland Railway network. In 1923, the class was inherited by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), which made alterations to some members of the class, including the installation of new boilers and the removal of smokebox wings.
The new Rapido Trains UK models will represent the Dübs & Co. built locomotives and will feature various detailing variants, including different chimneys, domes, safety valves, and other small details. The models will also include factory-installed speakers, NEM coupler pockets, and an ESU 21-pin decoder socket. The range will be available in various liveries, from pre-grouping to British Railways, as well as a 'What if' Highland Railway Yellow livery.
The models are suitable for operation on 2nd radius curves (438mm or greater) and feature a smooth-running mechanism, firebox flicker with a dynamic fire draw effect, and tender pickups. The detailing bag will include additional parts for personalisation, such as screw link couplings, steam heating pipes, and etched number plates. The Highland Railway Society has been instrumental in the development of the model, providing research materials and advice throughout the project.
