The Rapido Trains UK OO gauge Highland Railway Loch Class 4-4-0 model range represents the Dübs & Co. built locomotives, which were designed by David Jones, the Highland Railway Locomotive Superintendent. The class was introduced in 1896 and consisted of 18 locomotives, all of which were named after Scottish lochs.
The locomotives were designed to traverse the undulating landscape of the Inverness to Perth line and the new direct line via Aviemore, which included the challenging Slochd Summit. The Loch Class was a powerful and reliable design, producing 17,070 lbs of tractive effort. A further three locomotives were built by the North British Locomotive Company during World War One, which differed from the Dübs & Co. built locomotives in several ways.
The class was later superseded by the Castle Class, but the Lochs continued to work on local passenger services and branch lines. The entire class was inherited by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1923, which made several alterations to some of the locomotives, including fitting new boilers to prolong their lifespans.
The new Rapido Trains UK model range will feature a variety of liveries, from pre-grouping to British Railways days, as well as a 'What if' Highland Railway yellow livery. The models will include detailing variants, such as different chimneys, domes, safety valves, and smokeboxes, and will feature a smooth-running mechanism, three factory-installed speakers, and a dynamic firebox flicker effect.
The models will be available in 1:76 scale and will be suitable for operation on 2nd radius curves of 438mm or greater. They will also feature factory-fitted speakers, NEM coupler pockets, and an ESU 21-pin decoder socket. The range has been developed in collaboration with the Highland Railway Society, who have provided research materials and advice throughout the project.
