The Rapido Trains UK OO gauge Highland Railway Loch Class 4-4-0 range is a model of a class of steam locomotives that were built by Dübs & Co. in 1896-1897. The class was designed by David Jones, the Locomotive Superintendent of the Highland Railway, to produce 17,070 lbs of tractive effort, making them more powerful than the Strath Class. The locomotives were originally intended for passenger services on the Highland Railway network, particularly on the Inverness to Perth line and the new direct line via Aviemore.
The class of 18 locomotives was later supplemented by a further three built by The North British Locomotive Company in 1917. These locomotives had a modified tender and a Westinghouse pump. The Loch Class was eventually superseded by the Castle Class, but they continued to be used for local passenger services and branch line work until their eventual withdrawal.
The locomotives were inherited by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, and underwent various modifications, including the replacement of boilers on some of the original Dübs & Co. locos. The models in the Rapido Trains UK range will be available in a variety of liveries, from pre-grouping to British Railways days, and will feature detailing variants such as different chimneys, domes, safety valves and smoke boxes.
The models will also include features such as factory-installed speakers, NEM coupler pockets, an ESU 21-pin decoder socket, tender pickups, and a dynamic fire draw effect. The range has been developed in collaboration with the Highland Railway Society, who provided research materials and advice throughout the project.
