The Rapido Trains UK OO Gauge Highland Railway Loch Class 4-4-0 range is a new model of steam locomotive designed to represent the Dübs & Co. built locos of this class. The Highland Railway's Locomotive Superintendent, David Jones, designed the 4-4-0 locomotive in the late 19th century to provide a powerful and reliable engine for passenger services on the Inverness to Perth line and the new direct line via Aviemore.
The Highland Railway ordered 15 locos from Dübs & Co. in 1896, with the final loco delivered in September 1897. The locos were named after inland Scottish lochs and were designed to produce 17,070 pounds of tractive effort, making them more powerful than the Strath Class. Three additional locos were built by The North British Locomotive Company during World War I, with modifications to the tender and Westinghouse pump.
The Loch Class locos were eventually superseded by the Castle Class and were relegated to local passenger services and pilot work. They were inherited by the LMS in 1923, which made alterations to some of the locos, including fitting new boilers to prolong their lifespan.
The Rapido Trains UK models will represent the Dübs & Co. built locos and will be available in various liveries, including pre-grouping, LMS, and BR. The range will also feature 'what if' liveries, including a Highland Railway Yellow livery. The models will include a range of detailing variants, including different chimneys, domes, and smokeboxes, as well as a selection of small detail variants. Each model will feature a smooth-running mechanism, factory-installed speakers, NEM coupler pockets, an ESU 21-pin decoder socket, and tender pickups.
