Rapido Trains UK has announced a new OO gauge model of the Highland Railway's Loch Class 4-4-0 locomotive. The model will feature DCC sound and is available in various liveries, including pre-grouping and BR-era schemes.
The Highland Railway's Loch Class was a 4-4-0 design introduced in 1896, with 15 locos built by Dübs & Co. and a further three by the North British Locomotive Company during World War I. The class was named after various inland Scottish lochs and was designed by David Jones, who also designed the successful 'Big Goods' or 'Jones Goods' locomotive.
The Loch Class locomotives were known for their reliability and were used on various routes and services throughout the Highland Railway network. They were eventually superseded by the Castle Class and relegated to local passenger services and pilot work.
The Rapido model features a range of detailing variants, including different chimneys, domes, safety valves, smoke boxes, and doors. The model also includes a selection of small detail parts, such as lubricators, safety valve turrets, and tender gongs. The detailing bag includes additional parts for personalisation, including screw link couplings, steam heating pipes, and etched number plates.
The model features a smooth-running mechanism, factory-installed speakers, and a 21-pin DCC decoder socket. The Rapido Loch Class 4-4-0 model is available in 1:76 scale and is suitable for operation on 2nd radius curves of 438mm or greater.
