Dapol is set to produce a range of GWR Toplight Mainline City coaches in OO gauge. The coaches, which are all third, composite and brake third, are designed to accompany the recently released Dapol 61xx Prairie 2-6-2 locomotives.

The coaches feature a highly accurate injection moulded body with bolection window mouldings and frosted Toplight windows. Separate metal door and commode handles are also included. The coaches have wire end handrails and separately applied end communication details. The correct number of roof ventilators will be included, depending on the period being modelled.

The chassis of the coaches is highly detailed, with vacuum tanks, battery boxes and brake linkages all accurately represented. The 9ft bogie bolster features diecast side frames and split axles for electrical pickup. The interior of the coaches is also highly detailed, with period-specific decorations applied.

The coaches have a number of technical specifications, including kinematic couplings with NEM pockets, allowing for close coupling. They are capable of navigating R2 radius curves and feature sprung metal buffers. Internal lighting and a directional tail lamp are also included. The coaches can be optionally DCC fitted with a six-pin decoder.

The real-life coaches were built at Swindon Works between 1920 and 1921. Six sets of coaches were produced, each comprising six coaches. The coaches were designed to be close coupled and were constructed with a steel body. Due to the restricted loading gauge of the London underground tunnels, the coaches were 7 inches lower than other contemporary carriages.

The coaches were originally used for commuter services from Reading and Windsor into the City of London, but were removed from revenue-earning service in December 1956. All coaches had been removed by December 1957. Two brake third coaches and one all third coach were converted into workmen's coaches for the miners' service between Glyncorrwg and North Rhondda Halt in 1958.
