Accurascale has announced a new OO/4mm scale model of the BR Class 89 'Badger' electric locomotive, specifically the prototype 'Avocet' in InterCity Swallow livery. The model is part of a limited edition run produced by Rails of Sheffield and features DCC sound.

The model is based on Accurascale's Class 92 platform and boasts all-wheel powered six-axle bogies and a pantograph that can be raised and lowered under DC or DCC control. The locomotive has a highly detailed OO scale design, with a die-cast metal chassis, RP25-110 profile OO wheels, and separately-applied etched metal and plastic detail parts.

Key features of the model include a scale-sized Brecknall-Willis High Speed pantograph, powerPack capacitor for uninterrupted power, and a customised Dual-Speaker Technology system with a large bass speaker and a smaller 'iphone' style cube for higher frequencies. The model is also DCC ready with a powerPack capacitor and can be fitted with a Hall sensor for a flange squeal effect.

The model features a five-pole motor with two flywheels and a metal helical gearbox for maximum performance and slow speed running. The locomotive can achieve a minimum scale top speed of 125 mph and has all-wheel drive and pickup.

The Class 89 'Avocet' was a unique locomotive designed by Brush Traction and constructed by British Rail Engineering Ltd at Crewe Works in 1986. The locomotive was used as a test bed between 1986 and 1988 before being delivered in the InterCity Executive scheme and later repainted in the Swallow livery. It was preserved and has undergone several repaints and changes in ownership, including a recent partnership with Locomotive Services Ltd to restore it to operational condition.
