The Accurascale Class 89 is a highly detailed OO scale model of the BR Class 89 'Badger' electric locomotive. This limited edition model is being produced by Rails of Sheffield and features DCC sound. The model is based on the Class 92 platform and has all-wheel powered six-axle bogies and a pantograph that can be raised or lowered using DCC or DC control.
The model is a highly detailed representation of the Class 89 locomotive, with a die-cast metal chassis and RP25-110 profile OO wheels. It features separately-applied etched metal and plastic detail parts, including grab handles, steps, wipers, and scale width wire handrails. The underframe tank detail is fully represented, with brackets and pipework, and the model has fully sprung metal buffers and bufferplate.
The model is DCC ready and has a powerpack capacitor for uninterrupted power. It also features a hall sensor for a flange squeal effect. The model has a five-pole motor with two flywheels and a metal helical gear box for maximum performance and slow speed running. The gearing is arranged to allow the locomotive to achieve a minimum scale top speed of 125mph.
The lighting pack on the model features directional lighting, DC and DCC, switchable red and white marker lights with day/night options, and separately switched cab lighting and illuminated driver's desk. The model is based on the original Class 89 prototype, which was designed by Brush Traction and constructed by British Rail Engineering Ltd at Crewe Works in 1986. The prototype was used as a test bed and eventually settled into service working between Kings Cross and Leeds.
The Class 89 story is a fascinating one, with the prototype being used on various railways over the years, including being purchased for preservation and later returning to operation with GNER. The model is a highly detailed and accurate representation of this unique locomotive, and is a must-have for any railway enthusiast.
