Accurascale has announced a new OO/4mm scale model of the BR Class 89 'Badger' electric locomotive. This limited edition model is being produced by Rails of Sheffield and features DCC sound and a high level of detail.

The model is based on the Class 92 platform and features all-wheel powered six-axle bogies and a pantograph that can be raised or lowered using DCC or DC control. The OO scale model is 1:76.2 scale and has a minimum radius requirement of 438mm. The chassis is die-cast metal, and the wheels are RP25-110 profile.

The model includes a range of separately-applied etched metal and plastic detail parts, including grab handles, steps, wipers, and more. The handrails are scale width wire, and the underframe tank detail is fully featured with brackets and pipework. The model also includes fully sprung metal buffers and bufferplate, factory-fitted pipework, and screw couplings.

The model features Deluxe and DCC options, including a scale-sized Brecknall-Willis High Speed pantograph that can be raised and lowered using DCC control. The locomotive also features a powerPack capacitor for uninterrupted power and a customised Dual-Speaker Technology system for improved sound quality. The model is DCC ready with a 21-Pin MTX socket or factory-fitted DCC sound options.

The prototype Class 89 was designed by Brush Traction and built by British Rail Engineering Ltd at Crewe Works in 1986. The locomotive was used as a test bed between 1986 and 1988 before being delivered to the InterCity Executive scheme. It was later painted in the new Swallow livery and named 'Avocet' by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The locomotive continued in service until 1992, when it was withdrawn and eventually sold for preservation. It was later acquired by GNER and returned to operation before being withdrawn again in 2001. The locomotive is currently being restored by the AC Locomotive Group and is due to be returned to the national network in the near future.
