Manufacturer description

73970 – Caledonian Sleeper, Current

The partner to 73966 in its current condition is 73970. This locomotive was converted from JB E6023/73117 which was built in March 1966 at the Vulcan foundry. Converted in 2016, this locomotive became the only “namer” of the Caledonian sleeper 73s on the 24th of May 2024 when in a ceremony at the Bo’ness and Kinneil railway it was given the name W. S. Sellar in memory of founding member of the SRPS. The name had previously been carried by 37175 before its sale from preservation to Colas Rail. Our model depicts 73970 in its current condition as running today with the drop Dellner, 3rd rail equipment removed, the bodyside windows replaced by grilles and nameplates.

Accurascale Class 73 – Caledonian (Current) – 73970 W. S. Sellar – DCC sound fitted is a model railway locomotive produced to represent the British Rail Class 73 numbered 73970 in its present day condition. The model includes a motorised working fan, a DCC‑compatible sound decoder (part number ACC3340‑DCC) and is finished in the Caledonian sleeper livery. It is intended to illustrate the period of the initial privatisation of British rail.

The prototype locomotive was originally built as JB E6023/73117 at the Vulcan Foundry in March 1966 and was converted to a Class 73 in 2016. On 24 May 2024, at a ceremony on the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, it was formally named W. S. Sellar in memory of a founding member of the SRPS, becoming the sole “namer” of the Caledonian sleeper 73s. The name had previously been carried by 37175 before that locomotive passed to Colas Rail.

The Accurascale model depicts 73970 in its current configuration, showing the removal of Dellner couplings and third‑rail equipment, bodyside windows replaced by grilles and the appropriate nameplates fitted. The model is ready for DCC operation with sound and a working fan.
