Manufacturer description

This attractively liveried Austerity was built in 1945 by W. G. Bagnall in Stafford and was one of the 377 locomotives built for the War Department and originally carried the number 75174. When demobbed, the locomotives was purchased by the United Steel Companies and put to work on the steelworks system at Scunthorpe. Externally a virtually standard Austerity, our model carries the heavy duty “Yorkshire” buffers that were fitted to the prototype when it was in service.

Accurascale's Hunslet 'Austerity' 0-6-0 Saddle Tank Locomotive is a highly detailed model designed to represent the British Railways Late Crest period. The model is fitted with a DCC sound system and features a powerful coreless motor, ensuring smooth and reliable operation. Weighing nearly 250g, the locomotive is designed to handle heavy trains with ease.

The Accurascale Austerity model is based on the real-life locomotive built by W.G. Bagnall in 1945 for the United Steel Company's Ore Mining Branch. The model features a highly detailed cab interior, etched metal/plastic detail parts, and a sliding roof ventilator. The locomotive's paintwork is accurately represented, with the 'Yorkshire' buffers and heavy-duty buffers fitted to the prototype.

The Hunslet Austerity is a well-known class of locomotive, with 485 built between 1943 and 1964. The locomotives were designed to be simple, yet powerful, and were used for various purposes, including shunting and heavy haulage. The class was adopted by the National Coal Board, who used them extensively across the UK.

The locomotives were known for their reliability and ease of maintenance, making them a popular choice for industrial railways. Many Austerities were modified over the years, with some being fitted with different blastpipe and chimney arrangements to improve efficiency. The last Austerity was built in 1964 and was the last standard gauge steam locomotive built for use in the British Isles until 2008.

Today, many preserved railways rely on Austerities for motive power, and their value has increased as the costs of running other locomotives have become less economical.
