Prototype Era
Era 4 (1948 to 1956) British Railways Early Crest
This attractively liveried Austerity was built in 1945 by W. G. Bagnall in Stafford and was one of the 377 locomotives built for the War Department and originally carried the number 75174. When demobbed, the locomotives was purchased by the United Steel Companies and put to work on the steelworks system at Scunthorpe. Externally a virtually standard Austerity, our model carries the heavy duty “Yorkshire” buffers that were fitted to the prototype when it was in service.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Accurascale has released a new 0-6-0 saddle tank locomotive model, the Hunslet 'Austerity' United Steel Company 'Ore Mining Branch' No.18, in 00 gauge.
The model is designed to represent the early British Railways era and features a highly detailed and accurate representation of the real locomotive. The Accurascale Austerity has a coreless motor and a flywheel for maximum performance and slow speed running, and is also equipped with a powerPack capacitor for uninterrupted power.
The model features a die-cast metal chassis and pickups to all wheels, as well as RP25-110 profile 00 gauge wheels. The locomotive also has a highly detailed cab interior, including a pulsing/steady firebox glow, and is equipped with etched metal/plastic detail parts, including grab handles, steps, pipework, lamp irons, and a sliding roof ventilator.
The model is available with a Next18 DCC ready or ESU LokSound V5 sound fitted, and has a small, flexible neck NEM coupler mounts set at correct height, with mini-tension-lock couplers. The brake rigging is factory-fitted and the brake blocks are aligned with the wheels.
The Accurascale Hunslet Austerity is a popular and iconic locomotive, with around 485 built and nearly 60 surviving to preservation. The locomotive was designed to be a heavy shunting locomotive, capable of starting a train of over 1000 tons on the level and at least 300 tons on a 1 in 50 grade. The first Austerity steamed at Hunslet's works on 1 January 1943, and the design was later adopted by the National Coal Board and other railway companies.
The Austerity locomotive has a rich history, with many being sold to other countries and used in a variety of roles. In the UK, the locomotives were used by the War Department, the LNER, and the National Coal Board, among others. The locomotives were also experimented with, with different blastpipe and chimney arrangements being fitted to improve efficiency.
The Accurascale model is a highly detailed and accurate representation of this iconic locomotive, and is sure to be a popular addition to any model railway layout.
