The Ellis Clark Trains Quad Art Set No. 72B features a 4 coach pack in British Railways' Maroon livery. This OO gauge model represents the early British Railways era, specifically the period after the nationalisation of the railways in 1948.
The set includes finely detailed bogies with wheel, brake rigging and underframe details, as well as brass bearings and separate bogie variations for the centre and end bogies. The centre bogie is sprung, allowing the coaches to run smoothly on radius 2 curves and points. The set also features unclippable NEM pockets and sprung buffers on the brake end coach.
The model has a fully detailed diecast chassis with accurate pipework and fittings underneath. The coaches have detailed bodies with separate door grab rails, highly detailed interior lighting and fully detailed interiors with etched luggage racks and correct height seats. The roofs are fully detailed with separately fitted vents and magnetic and push fit roofs.
The Quad Art coaches were built between 1923 and 1925, with a small pause during this period to consider electrification of the London suburban lines. A total of 97 sets were produced, with some sets being built by outside contractors. The Quads were a popular and reliable workhorse on the suburban lines, often running in sets of 8 coaches.
The Quad Arts were used extensively on the UK mainline, with some sets reaching speeds of 90mph behind an A4 locomotive. They were eventually phased out in April 1966, but their legacy lives on in the model railway community.
