Ellis Clark Trains Quad Art Set No. 84A is a OO gauge model railway set, depicting British Railways' Early Crest period. The set includes four coaches with finely detailed bogies, featuring wheel, brake rigging, and underframe details. The bogies have brass bearings and separate variations for centre and end bogies, allowing for prototypical running on curves and points.
The chassis of the coaches is fully detailed, with diecast construction, detailed fittings, and pipework. The set includes sprung centre connectors for radius 2 curves and points, as well as unclippable NEM pockets and sprung buffers on the brake end coach. The paint and printing detail is accurate and highly detailed.
The bodies of the coaches feature detailed designs, with separate door grab rails, high-quality coach ends, and lit destination boards on the brake ends. The interiors are fully detailed, with etched luggage racks, correct height seats, and 'low glow' interior lighting with hidden circuit boards. The roofs are fully detailed, with separately fitted vents and magnetic and push-fit roofs.
The set includes magnetic switched lighting in each carriage and accurate and detailed paint and printing detail. The running numbers for this set are E86303E, E86305E, E86306E, and E86307E.
The Quad Arts were a series of articulated coaches built between 1923 and 1925 by the Great Northern Railway, London and North Eastern Railway, and contractors. A total of 97 sets were produced, with 44 of these being built by the GNR, 38 by the LNER, and 15 by contractors. The Quads were a popular choice for suburban services and were used until their retirement in April 1966.
The Quads were used with a variety of locomotives, including A4s, BR Class 20s, and Class 31s. One famous set, Set 85, was nicknamed the 'Pottersbarbarian' and was used to haul the 1758 train between Kings Cross and Welwyn Garden City. Another well-known set, from Set 74, has been preserved by the M&GN Society and North Norfolk Railway and is still in service. The Quad Arts were painted in three liveries during their service: varnished teak, BR Crimson, and BR Maroon.
