Manufacturer description

Locomotive Background Information

The series of models being manufactured by Dapol are to the later Churchward build from numbers 5390 through to 7321, constructed between 1920 and 1923 with the final eight (6362-6369) in 1925 under Collett. These Collett locomotives had outside cylinder steam pipes fitted from new, whilst this feature was added to the majority of the earlier batch from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. The last to be withdrawn was 6395 on 21-11-1964.

General Specification

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models. The locomotive has a diecast chassis with a five pole motor driving the rear wheels. To add compensation the centre driving wheels are sprung, the front pony truck is also sprung and operates on a cam so the model will negotiate R2 curves with ease.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime many details have been drawn up as follows:-

The Dapol GWR 43xx 2-6-0 Mogul steam locomotive in Khaki livery represents a locomotive from the Railway Operating Division during World War One. This model is DCC Ready and features a 30-1 ratio gear for improved slow speed running and an accurate top speed. The model has a die-cast compensated chassis, a new cab with higher and shorter roof, and detailed cab interior. Other features include a full profile cylinder, new motion bracket and boiler support, and brass plated safety valve casing. The model has a sprung front bogie that operates on a cam, allowing for easy navigation of R2 curves. The tender has a smooth sided body and features Churchward tapered and Collett straight shank buffers and main footplate with prototypical overhang.

The model has a slide-in PCB for easy installation of a NEXT-18 DCC decoder and a 'no-solder' speaker connection. The tender to locomotive drawbar has reliable electrical connections moulded within the close-coupling push-fit coupling. The model has 12 wheels with electrical pick-up, enhanced by a sprung centre driving wheel. Other technical specifications include a sugar cube mountable on the slide-out PCB board, a Base Reflex speaker housed in the tender, and an audio frequency filter integrated within the main locomotive PCB. The model is expected to be available in shops during Q1-Q2 2022.

The GWR 43xx class of locomotives was built between 1911 and 1932, with production occurring before, during, and after World War One. The class was designed to be powerful enough for heavy goods work and fast and steady enough to work heavy excursion and passenger trains. The locomotives were used on various duties on the GWR network and later the Western Region of British Railways, earning a reputation for their ability to handle most types of traffic.
