Manufacturer description

The BR Class 29 is a type of Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive designed for both freight and passenger use. Although outwardly similar to the Class 22, they actually share no mechanical parts and in fact were a modified Class 21 with a replacement Paxman engine with improvements to power output.

These modifications were carried out between 1963 and 1965 mainly at the Polmadie Traction & Rolling Stock Depot in Glasgow. After the rebuild, the locomotives returned to Scottish duties until their withdrawal in 1971. No Class 29 locomotives survive preservation. Dapol have managed to provide for the Class 21 also in the tooling and this will be made concurrently with the Class 29.

The first EP’s have arrived and are currently being evaluated by the design team and a series of corrective measures will be made to each of the models to ensure that they are as true to the prototype as possible.

Dapol’s Class 21 model replicates British Railways locomotive D6116, built to a pristine finish in the late‑crest green livery with small yellow warning panels. The model is DCC‑ready (DCC 21) and features both directional and interior lighting, as well as magnetic and traditional NEM/tension‑lock couplings.

The locomotive is represented in a Bo‑Bo wheel arrangement and is powered by a 5‑pole super‑creep motor with twin brass flywheels, providing all‑wheel drive, power pickup from all wheels and controlled slow‑running capability. Cast wheels are finely detailed and the body includes etched grilles, separate handrails and metal‑sprung buffers.

Key specifications include a minimum curve radius of 2 inches, a maximum speed of 75 mph (prototype), and a build period of 1958‑1960 for the original class. The model measures 206 mm over buffers, 34 mm wide and 49 mm high, and is supplied with an accessory bag containing optional fittings.
