Manufacturer description

The BR Class 29 is a type of Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive designed for both freight and passenger use. Although outwardly similar to the Class 22, they actually share no mechanical parts and in fact were a modified Class 21 with a replacement Paxman engine with improvements to power output.

These modifications were carried out between 1963 and 1965 mainly at the Polmadie Traction & Rolling Stock Depot in Glasgow. After the rebuild, the locomotives returned to Scottish duties until their withdrawal in 1971. No Class 29 locomotives survive preservation. Dapol have managed to provide for the Class 21 also in the tooling and this will be made concurrently with the Class 29.

The first EP’s have arrived and are currently being evaluated by the design team and a series of corrective measures will be made to each of the models to ensure that they are as true to the prototype as possible.

Dapol Class 21 D6120 in BR green (DCC‑Sound) is a ready‑to‑run model of a British Railways Bo‑Bo diesel‑electric locomotive. It represents the late‑crest version of Class 21 built by the North British Locomotive Co. between 1958 and 1960.

The model measures 206 mm in length, 34 mm in width and 49 mm in height. All wheels are powered for pickup, and it is fitted with NEM/tension‑lock couplings. The finish is described as pristine. Manufacturer part number is 4D‑025‑002S.

Historically the prototype locomotive was used for both freight and passenger duties and was later rebuilt as Class 29 with a Paxman engine at Polmadie Depot, Glasgow, between 1963 and 1965. The rebuilt locomotives operated in Scotland until withdrawal in 1971; none survive in preservation. Dapol intends to produce a matching Class 29 model using the same tooling.

Initial engineering prototypes (EPs) have arrived and are undergoing evaluation by Dapol’s design team. Corrective adjustments will be applied to ensure the final model accurately reflects the original locomotive.
