Prototype Eras
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
Era 4 (1948 to 1956) British Railways Early Crest
The first diesel railcar was introduced by the GWR in 1933. The innovation was to prove extremely successful and they continued in operation well into the 1960s when their use was eclipsed by the introduction of the BR first generation DMUs. The railcar’s art deco air smoothed styling has lead to their nickname of `Flying Banana’ although later variants were produced to a more angular style. In all 38 GWR diesel railcars were produced from 1933 to 1942 at three different sites with three surviving into preservation.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Streamlined Parcels Railcar 17 in GWR chocolate and cream with Express Parcels branding
The Dapol Streamlined Railcar Express Parcels BR Crimson Locomotive No.17 is a OO gauge model of a Great Western Railway Gloucester Railcar. The model is fitted with DCC and features a pristine finish in the livery of British Railways Express Parcels. The locomotive is modelled as a diesel railcar, with a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement and is based on the 1935-1937 production era. The model measures 250mm in length, 34mm in width, and 49mm in height, and can be used on a minimum radius curve of 2.
The model features a finely moulded body with many separately applied details, including etched grills, directional lighting, and external logos and numbering. The model also includes sprung buffers, cast wheels with fine relief and colouring, and a tungsten chassis. Additional features include all wheel pickup, NEM coupling pockets, and an accessory bag with added detail parts and spares.
The model is part of the AEC Railcar class and represents the Express Parcels livery of the 1923-1947 era. The locomotive is powered by a 5 pole skew wound motor for smooth running, and can be used with a 2 rail DCC system. The model is compatible with the STX882106 Diesel Sound Decoder by Soundtraxx, which requires a speaker to operate.
The Dapol Streamlined Railcar Express Parcels BR Crimson Locomotive No.17 is a detailed and accurate model of a classic British diesel railcar, suitable for use on OO gauge model railways representing the Big Four era.
