Manufacturer description

The first diesel railcar was introduced by the GWR in 1933. The innovation was to prove extremely successful and they continued in operation well into the 1960s when their use was eclipsed by the introduction of the BR first generation DMUs. The railcar’s art deco air smoothed styling has lead to their nickname of `Flying Banana’ although later variants were produced to a more angular style. In all 38 GWR diesel railcars were produced from 1933 to 1942 at three different sites with three surviving into preservation.

Dapol Streamlined Railcar GWR Lined Chocolate/Cream No 12 is a OO gauge model that is DCC fitted. The body is finished in pristine chocolate and cream livery and carries the running number 12. It represents a Great Western Railway diesel railcar built between 1935 and 1937, of the Bo‑Bo wheel arrangement, and is powered from all wheels. The model measures 250 mm over the buffers, 34 mm wide and 49 mm high, and can negotiate a minimum radius of 2 inches.

The model includes directional lighting, interior lighting and a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor for smooth running. Details such as etched grills, finely printed external logos and numbering, cast wheels with relief, sprung buffers and a tungsten chassis are applied separately. An accessory bag supplies additional detail parts and spares, and the new variant features an updated body shell, glazing and a detailed parcel shelving interior.

Sound is provided via a Soundtraxx STX882106 diesel sound decoder (speaker required) and the model uses a 2‑rail DCC track supply. The railcar is historically noted as part of the GWR “Flying Banana” series, the first diesel railcars introduced in 1933, of which 38 were built and three survive in preservation.
