Prototype Eras
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
Era 4 (1948 to 1956) British Railways Early Crest
The first diesel railcar was introduced by the GWR in 1933. The innovation was to prove extremely successful and they continued in operation well into the 1960s when their use was eclipsed by the introduction of the BR first generation DMUs. The railcar’s art deco air smoothed styling has lead to their nickname of `Flying Banana’ although later variants were produced to a more angular style. In all 38 GWR diesel railcars were produced from 1933 to 1942 at three different sites with three surviving into preservation.
MODEL

Streamlined Parcels Railcar 17 in GWR chocolate and cream with Express Parcels branding
The Dapol Streamlined Railcar BR Lined Carmine/Cream (No. W8) is a 00‑gauge, DCC‑fitted model representing a Great Western Railway Gloucester Railcar built between 1935 and 1937. It measures 250 mm in length, 34 mm in width and 49 mm in height, and can negotiate a minimum radius of 2 inches. All wheels are used for power pickup and the motor is a 5‑pole skew‑wound unit for smooth running.
The model finishes in a pristine crimson and cream livery, with accurately applied external logos and numbering, etched grills, directional lighting and interior illumination. It features a finely moulded body with separate details, sprung buffers, cast wheels with fine relief and appropriate colour, and a tungsten chassis.
The railcar is based on the GWR diesel railcars introduced in 1933, of which 38 were built until 1942. These vehicles operated under British Railways into the 1960s before being superseded by first‑generation DMUs. The model includes an accessory bag containing extra detail parts and spares, a new body shell, updated glazing and a detailed interior with parcel shelving.
Sound is provided by the Soundtraxx STX882106 diesel sound decoder (speaker required). The model conforms to era 3 (1923–1947) specifications and uses a 2‑rail DCC track supply.
