Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
The first diesel railcar was introduced by the GWR in 1933. The innovation was to prove extremely successful and they continued in operation well into the 1960s when their use was eclipsed by the introduction of the BR first generation DMUs. The railcar’s art deco air smoothed styling has lead to their nickname of `Flying Banana’ although later variants were produced to a more angular style. In all 38 GWR diesel railcars were produced from 1933 to 1942 at three different sites with three surviving into preservation.

Streamlined Parcels Railcar 17 in GWR chocolate and cream with Express Parcels branding
Dapol Streamlined Railcar Express Parcels Choc/Cream Locomotive No 17 is a 4 mm scale model that is DCC fitted, presented in pristine condition with a chocolate and cream livery and the running number 17 displayed on the side. The model has an all‑wheel power pickup, interior lighting and a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor for smooth operation, and it is capable of negotiating a minimum radius of 2 standard gauge track curves.
The prototype was a Great Western Railway diesel railcar built between 1935 and 1937 as part of the GWR’s first series of diesel units introduced in 1933. A total of 38 of these railcars were produced at three sites and remained in service into the 1960s, when they were superseded by the first‑generation British Rail DMUs. Their aerodynamic Art Deco styling earned them the nickname “Flying Banana”, although later versions adopted a more angular appearance.
The model includes a finely moulded body with separately applied details such as etched grills, cast wheels with fine relief and appropriate colouration, sprung buffers and NEM coupling pockets. The livery is accurately applied, and the interior features directional lighting and a detailed parcel shelving arrangement. An accessory bag supplies additional detail parts and spares, and the kit incorporates a new body shell, updated glazing and interior components.
Technical specifications are as follows: class AEC Railcar, livery Express Parcels Choc/Cream, era 3 (1923‑1947), Bo‑Bo wheel configuration, DCC fitted with 2‑rail track supply, and a sound decoder STX882106 by Soundtraxx (speaker required). The model measures 250 mm in length over buffers, 34 mm in width and 49 mm in height.
