Manufacturer description

The first diesel railcar was introduced by the GWR in 1933. The innovation was to prove extremely successful and they continued in operation well into the 1960s when their use was eclipsed by the introduction of the BR first generation DMUs. The railcar’s art deco air smoothed styling has lead to their nickname of `Flying Banana’ although later variants were produced to a more angular style. In all 38 GWR diesel railcars were produced from 1933 to 1942 at three different sites with three surviving into preservation.

Dapol Streamlined Railcar GWR Twin Cities Chocolate/Cream Locomotive No 16 is a OO gauge model of a Great Western Railway diesel railcar built between 1935 and 1937.

The real railcars were introduced by the GWR in 1933 and remained in service into the 1960s before being superseded by the first‑generation British Rail DMUs. Their Art Deco styling earned the nickname "Flying Banana". A total of 38 railcars were produced, three of which survive in preservation.

The model is finished in a pristine chocolate and cream livery, carries the running number 16 and represents the GWR Gloucester Railcar class with a Bo‑Bo wheel arrangement. It measures 250 mm long, 34 mm wide and 49 mm high, fits a minimum curve radius of 2, and uses all‑wheel power pickup. The chassis is made of tungsten and it is DCC ready with a 21‑pin socket, suitable for 12 V DC track supply. Both directional and interior lighting are fitted.

Detailing includes a finely moulded body with separately applied etched grills, cast wheels with fine relief and appropriate colour, sprung buffers, a 5‑pole skew wound motor for smooth running and an accessory bag containing extra detail parts and spares. The new variant offers an updated body shell, revised glazing and a more detailed interior parcel shelving.

Measurements (over buffers): length 250 mm, width 34 mm, height 49 mm.
