Manufacturer description

The first diesel railcar was introduced by the GWR in 1933. The innovation was to prove extremely successful and they continued in operation well into the 1960s when their use was eclipsed by the introduction of the BR first generation DMUs. The railcar’s art deco air smoothed styling has lead to their nickname of `Flying Banana’ although later variants were produced to a more angular style. In all 38 GWR diesel railcars were produced from 1933 to 1942 at three different sites with three surviving into preservation.

The Dapol Streamlined Railcar GWR Twin Cities Chocolate/Cream No. 16 is an OO‑scale model that is DCC fitted and finished in pristine condition. It represents a Great Western Railway diesel railcar built between 1935 and 1937, classed as a GWR Gloucester Railcar with a Bo‑Bo wheel arrangement and all‑wheel power pickup.

The model measures 250 mm in length, 34 mm in width and 49 mm in height, and can negotiate a minimum curve of radius 2. It features interior and directional lighting, sprung buffers, cast wheels with fine relief, a tungsten chassis, and a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor for smooth running. The livery is the chocolate and cream scheme used by the railway during the period 1923–1947.

Historical background notes that the first GWR diesel railcar entered service in 1933, earning the nickname “Flying Banana” because of its art‑deco styling. A total of 38 railcars were built from 1933 to 1942, with three surviving in preservation.

The model includes an accessory bag containing extra detail parts and spares, a new body shell, updated glazing and interior, and is supplied with a Soundtraxx STX882106 diesel sound decoder (speaker required). It complies with 2‑rail DCC track supply and carries the manufacturer part number 4D‑011‑009D.
