Manufacturer description
Seen as very much the ‘missing link’ in the ‘Powering Britain’ range, the 16 ton mineral wagon is an essential addition to the Accurascale range to tell the story of coal traffic on the railways throughout the 20th century. The archetypal BR 16 ton all-steel non-hoppered mineral wagon proliferated across the United Kingdom’s railway network during the 1950s and 1960s and there was probably not a siding, freight yard or industrial railway system in the country that did not house at least an example or three of these vitally important, yet mundane railway vehicles.

Accurascale has released a new 16T mineral wagon model, part of their 'Powering Britain' range. The model is available in a Rail Blue livery with a Horwich (Internal User) Rail Blue Triple Pack, featuring three wagons numbered 024269, 024285, and 024282.

The model features a die-cast metal chassis with a plastic body, weighing 37g excluding the coal load. It has a scale length of 78mm over buffers and a width of 34.53mm. The wagon has a minimum operating radius of 1:1 and is equipped with separately fitted side doors, top doors, and end doors. The wheels are metal, with a 3-hole design and are set in blackened brass bearings.

The model features eroded metal, plastic, and wire details, including handrails, grab handles, and lamp brackets. It also includes turned metal sprung buffers. The wagon's history began in 1944, when the Ministry of War Transport commissioned the construction of 6652 wagons to a design by Charles Roberts and Hurst Nelson. The wagons were built by various companies across the UK and were used for coal traffic on the railways.

The 16T mineral wagon was a crucial component of the British railway network, with over 221,123 wagons being built between 1951 and 1959. The wagon's design underwent several changes over the years, including the introduction of fitted brakes in 1957. The wagon's eventual decline in the 1980s led to its withdrawal from service and eventual scrapping.

The Accurascale model is a highly detailed representation of the 16T mineral wagon, with a focus on historical accuracy and authenticity. It is a welcome addition to the 'Powering Britain' range and is sure to be a popular choice among model railway enthusiasts.
