Seen as very much the ‘missing link’ in the ‘Powering Britain’ range, the 16 ton mineral wagon is an essential addition to the Accurascale range to tell the story of coal traffic on the railways throughout the 20th century. The archetypal BR 16 ton all-steel non-hoppered mineral wagon proliferated across the United Kingdom’s railway network during the 1950s and 1960s and there was probably not a siding, freight yard or industrial railway system in the country that did not house at least an example or three of these vitally important, yet mundane railway vehicles.

The Accurascale BR 16T Mineral wagon is a new addition to the 'Powering Britain' range, representing a key period in British railway history. The model is part of a triple pack, featuring three wagons with numbers 07045, 07035, and 07008.

The wagon's specification includes a die-cast metal chassis with a plastic body, weighing 37g and measuring 78mm in length and 34.53mm in width. The model features separately fitted side doors, top doors, and end doors, as well as metal 3-hole wheels and turned metal sprung buffers.

The Accurascale wagon is built to represent the period when British Railways' wagons were classified into Diagrams 1/100 to 1/105. The story behind the wagon's creation dates back to the 1940s, when the Ministry of War Transport developed designs for all-steel, end-door mineral wagons to replace the Private Owner coal wagons.

Following World War II, British Railways ordered 48,499 wagons, with many more being built in the following years. The Ideal Stocks Committee's report in 1950 led to the construction of 127,159 wagons, with the standard design being carried out to two diagrams: 1/108 and 1/109.

The 16T wagon played a significant role in the history of Britain's railways, with its massive building programme between 1951 and 1959 resulting in the construction of 221,123 wagons. Although the wagons were eventually withdrawn and scrapped, their legacy lives on in the preservation of steam locomotives, which were rescued from the cutters' torch by preservation groups.
