Manufacturer description
Seen as very much the ‘missing link’ in the ‘Powering Britain’ range, the 16 ton mineral wagon is an essential addition to the Accurascale range to tell the story of coal traffic on the railways throughout the 20th century. The archetypal BR 16 ton all-steel non-hoppered mineral wagon proliferated across the United Kingdom’s railway network during the 1950s and 1960s and there was probably not a siding, freight yard or industrial railway system in the country that did not house at least an example or three of these vitally important, yet mundane railway vehicles.

Accurascale has released a new 16T mineral wagon model in BR Freight Grey livery, part of their 'Powering Britain' range. This wagon type was a key part of British Railways' fleet, used to transport coal across the country.

The 16T mineral wagon was first introduced in 1944, as a result of the Ministry of War Transport's need for a reliable and efficient way to transport coal. The first wagons were built by several companies across the UK, with a total of 6652 wagons produced. In the post-war period, British Railways placed orders for 14,161 wagons to a new 'standard' design, which was carried out to two diagrams: the welded bodywork 1/108 and rivetted bodywork 1/109.

These wagons were built in large numbers, with 127,159 produced by the end of 1955. The 16T mineral wagon was a crucial part of British Railways' fleet, and its impact on the railway network was significant. However, the wagons were subject to corrosion and bad handling, and a policy of rebodying those with a service life of 10 years plus was introduced from 1971. The withdrawal of the wagons began in the 1960s, with the last ones disappearing from the network by the mid-1980s.

This Accurascale model is a triple pack, featuring three wagons with numbers B255909, B81569, and B156124. It has a die-cast metal chassis with a plastic body, and weighs 37g excluding the coal load. The model is available in BR Freight Grey livery, representing the late crest period. The model's specifications include a scale length of 78mm over buffers, a wheelbase of 36mm, and a minimum operating radius of 371mm (1st radius set-track).
