Accurascale has released a new model of the BR 16T Mineral wagon in BR Freight Grey livery, part of their 'Powering Britain' range. This model is a rebody version, representing the wagon's appearance after it was refurbished with a new, curved body to combat corrosion. The model is available in a triple pack, each wagon numbered B584934, B561424, and B587299.
The model features a die-cast metal chassis and plastic body, weighing 37g (excluding coal load). It measures 78mm in length over buffers and 34.53mm in width, with a wheelbase of 36mm. The minimum operating radius is 1 (371mm). The model has separately fitted side doors, top doors, and end doors, as well as metal 3-hole wheels with chemically blackened RP25-110 standard and blackened brass bearings.
The model includes eroded metal, plastic, and wire detail parts, such as handrails, grab handles, side-door handles, lamp brackets, brake gear, draw gear, 3-link and Instanter couplings, and turned metal sprung buffers. The model is available in a BR Freight Grey livery, representing the wagon's appearance prior to the introduction of TOPS in the 1960s.
The BR 16T Mineral wagon has a long and complex history, dating back to the 1940s. The wagon was designed to address the shortage of private owner coal wagons during World War II, with the first 6652 wagons being built between 1944 and 1945. The wagon's design was later modified and improved, with the introduction of new 'standard' designs in 1950. Between 1951 and 1959, a massive 221,123 wagons were built, making it the largest wagon building programme in British railway history.
The 16T wagon played a significant role in the transportation of coal, and its influence can still be seen in the preservation of steam locomotives. The model is an important addition to any railway enthusiast's collection, allowing them to recreate the story of coal traffic on the railways throughout the ages.
