Manufacturer description
Seen as very much the ‘missing link’ in the ‘Powering Britain’ range, the 16 ton mineral wagon is an essential addition to the Accurascale range to tell the story of coal traffic on the railways throughout the 20th century. The archetypal BR 16 ton all-steel non-hoppered mineral wagon proliferated across the United Kingdom’s railway network during the 1950s and 1960s and there was probably not a siding, freight yard or industrial railway system in the country that did not house at least an example or three of these vitally important, yet mundane railway vehicles.

Accurascale has released a new model of the BR 16T mineral wagon in BR Freight Grey livery, as part of their 'Powering Britain' range. The model is available in a triple pack, featuring three wagons with numbers B229292, B227719, and B252171. The wagon is built to a scale length of 78mm over buffers and features a die-cast metal chassis and plastic body. The model weighs 37g, excluding the coal load, and has a wheelbase of 36mm, allowing it to operate on a minimum radius of 371mm.

The model features separately fitted side doors, top doors, and end doors, as well as metal 3-hole wheels and chemically blackened RP25-110 standard wheel sets. The model also includes eroded metal, plastic, and wire detail parts, including handrails, grab handles, and lamp brackets. The buffers are made of turned metal and are sprung.

The BR 16T mineral wagon was introduced in 1944, with the first production taking place between 1944 and 1945. The wagon was designed to replace the Private Owner coal wagons that had been requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport during World War II. A total of 6652 wagons were produced during the war, with a further 9200 being built for the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF) to replace stock lost during the war.

After the war, British Railways continued to build the 16T wagon, with a total of 127,159 being constructed between 1951 and 1959. The wagon was used to transport coal and other minerals across the UK, and played a significant role in the country's post-war rebuilding efforts. The 16T wagon was eventually phased out in the 1980s, with many being scrapped or sold to preservation groups.
