Water Crane and Fire Devil

Stations often had these Water Cranes at the end of the platforms so the locomotives could be refilled without detaching them from the train. Also included is a coke brazier, called a 'fire devil' to keep the cast iron pipe from freezing up during the winter. These cranes were usually supplied by a large water tank (see Ratio 506 and 551 and Wills SS34 kits). Supplied with pre-coloured parts although painting and/or weathering can add realism; glue is required to complete this model.

Ratio Water Crane and Fire Devil is a model kit produced by Ratio, catalogued under part number 413. It forms part of Ratio's lineside accessory range for OO/HO gauge model railways.

The kit represents a water crane normally positioned at the end of a platform to refill steam locomotives without detaching them from the train. Included is a coke brazier, known as a “fire devil”, which was historically used to prevent the cast‑iron water pipe from freezing in winter. The crane is intended to be used with a large water tank, such as those supplied in Ratio kits 506, 551, or the Wills SS34 kit.

Components are supplied pre‑coloured, although additional painting or weathering may be applied for greater realism. Assembly requires glue to join the parts. The kit is designed for the 00 gauge range of building and accessory kits.
