Heljan model of the LNER Class U1 2‑8‑0+0‑8‑2T Beyer‑Garratt, reference 3002, representing a locomotive built in 1925 and operating during the era of the Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). The prototype, No 2395 (BR No 69999), was the largest and most powerful steam locomotive to run on British railways and performed banking duties on the Worsbrough and Lickey inclines for thirty years.
The model is supplied in LNER black livery and includes DCC Ready hardware with a 21‑pin interface. Factory‑fitted DCC sound, speakers and twin motor/flywheel drive are standard. Optional features include coal‑ or oil‑fired configurations, working LED lamps, removable cab roof, sprung buffers, NEM couplings and compatibility with smoke units.
Detail levels cover the locomotive’s full career, with variations such as changes to the smokebox, water tank breather pipes, coal bunker, handrails, cab, vacuum tanks and the oil‑firing conversion, which adds a turbo‑generator, electric headlight and associated pipework.
The model is currently in tooling; first working samples are expected in January 2024 and initial releases are planned for early 2025. A limited‑edition version will be packaged in works‑grey livery to mark the centenary of the prototype and the 200th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway opening in 1825.
