The Dapol 16 ton steel mineral wagon body is a model representation of a type of wagon that was introduced during World War II to meet the increased demand for coal transportation. Prior to the war, coal was transported in 12-ton wooden wagons, but the steel construction of the 16 ton wagons allowed for a 33% increase in load, making them a popular choice.
The design of the 16 ton wagon was continued into the post-war period by British Rail, which based its standard coal shifter on this design. Over 300,000 of these wagons were built by various construction companies, resulting in a range of design differences, including the use of rivets instead of the recommended all-welded construction in some cases.
The model 16 ton mineral wagon body is available from Dapol and is designed to be highly detailed. It is an unpainted body, requiring painting and attachment to a chassis of the modeller's choice. The model is 33mm wide, making it suitable for OO gauge modelling.
