Returning after a number of years, our popular LBSCR Class A1 & A1X ‘Terriers’ have been upgraded with a number of enhancements to the original release, and are now available to pre order.

 

More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the ‘Terrier’ due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LBSCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire in November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.

 

Specification: The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/bunker types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal brake rigging where appropriate.

Dapol Class A1X Terrier 0‑6‑0T BR Lined Black Late Crest ‘32662’ is a limited‑edition, DCC‑sound model released as part of the Rails of Sheffield range. The locomotive represents the British Railways Late Crest era and carries the manufacturer part number 4S‑010‑017S.

The original locomotive, formally the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 Class, was designed by William Stroudley and 50 examples were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. After being superseded on main lines, the class was employed on branch‑line duties and shunting until the early 1960s, the final member being withdrawn from the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on 15 November 1963. Ten of the original Terriers survive in preservation.

The model features a die‑cast chassis and running plate, a detailed plastic‑moulded body, flickering firebox and separately fitted components such as wooden or metal brake rigging where appropriate. Die‑cast wheels have a sprung centre for improved electrical pickup and traction. A powerful core‑less motor and a pre‑fitted 15 × 8 × 8 mm speaker deliver DCC sound, with a removable body exposing a NEXT‑18 socket for easy access. Factory‑fitted versions use Dapol’s own recording of locomotive 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway and include RealDrive braking control.

Enhancements over the 2021 release comprise a new solid‑roof cab, etched coal rails, added weight in the coal bunker, modified smokebox weight, an improved speaker for higher sound quality, a new stay‑alive circuit and easier DCC fitting.
