Locomotive background Information
More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast (LB&SCR) A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the Terrier due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.
With all the experience Dapol has gained from making the award winning O Gauge version of the A1 / A1X Terrier it is fully anticipated that this project will progress very quickly. Decorated samples are expected to be available in time for Warley 2018.
General Specification
The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/buner types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal break brake rigging where appropriate.
* Factory sound fitted locomotives will feature RealDrive braking
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.
Special commissions are usually only available new from the commissioning organisation, and may well have sold out on pre-order before they even end up listed here! But you may be able to find used items on marketplace or auction websites.

Dapol Terrier A1 LBSC Stroudley Improved Engine (Green Brighton Gold) is a limited‑edition OO‑scale model released under the “Rails of Sheffield” range. The product is supplied as a DCC‑fitted locomotive, part number 4S‑010‑007D, and represents the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 class (commonly known as the Terrier) as it appeared in the pre‑grouping era.
The original Terrier class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 examples were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works. After being displaced from main‑line duties, the locomotives continued in branch‑line and shunting service until the 1960s, the last of which was withdrawn on the Hayling Island line in Hampshire in November 1963. Ten members of the class survive in preservation.
The Dapol model incorporates a die‑cast chassis and running plate, a detailed plastic‑moulded body, and separate fitting of many components. It features die‑cast wheels with sprung centre driving wheels for improved electrical pickup and traction, a five‑pole skew‑wound motor, and full DCC and sound capability via a removable body that exposes a NEXT‑18 socket. Factory‑fitted sound units use Dapol’s own recordings of engine 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway and include RealDrive braking. The tooling allows production of most A1, A1X and IOW variants, including different cab, bunker, smokebox and boiler arrangements. Decorated samples were expected to become available in time for Warley 2018.
