Returning after a number of years, our popular LBSCR Class A1 & A1X ‘Terriers’ have been upgraded with a number of enhancements to the original release, and are now available to pre order.

 

More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the ‘Terrier’ due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LBSCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire in November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.

 

Specification: The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/bunker types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal brake rigging where appropriate.

Dapol Class A1 Terrier 0‑6‑0T Isle of Wight Central Railway Red ‘10’ Steam Locomotive is offered as a limited edition “Rails of Sheffield” model. It is DCC 18 compatible, carries the manufacturer part number 4S‑010‑014 and represents the pre‑grouping period.

The locomotive is a replica of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 Class, commonly known as a “Terrier”. Designed by William Stroudley, fifty examples were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works. They were later displaced on main London routes by larger engines and by the LBSCR electrification scheme, and most were reassigned to branch line work, shunting and non‑revenue duties. The class remained in service until the 1960s, the final engine being withdrawn on the Hayling Island Line, Hampshire, on 21 November 1963. Ten Terriers survive in preservation.

Key specifications include die‑cast chassis and running plate, a detailed plastic moulded body, a flickering firebox and a range of separately fitted parts. Wheels are die‑cast with a sprung centre for compensation, providing electrical pick‑up on all axles and improved traction. The model is fitted with a powerful core‑less motor, a pre‑installed DCC sound speaker (15 × 8 × 8 mm) and a NEXT‑18 socket accessible via a removable body. Dapol’s own recording of service number 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway is used for sound‑and‑DCC variants, and factory‑sound units feature RealDrive braking control.

Enhancements over the original 2021 release comprise a new cab with a solid roof, etched coal rails, additional weight in the coal bunker, adjusted smokebox weight, an improved speaker for higher sound quality, a revised “stay alive” function for better performance and easier access for DCC fitting. The model is now available for pre‑order.
