Returning after a number of years, our popular LBSCR Class A1 & A1X ‘Terriers’ have been upgraded with a number of enhancements to the original release, and are now available to pre order.

More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the ‘Terrier’ due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LBSCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire in November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.

Specification: The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/bunker types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal brake rigging where appropriate.

Dapol Class A1X Terrier 0-6-0T LBSCR Marsh Umber ‘680’ Steam Locomotive – DCC Sound is a limited‑edition model released as part of the Rails of Sheffield series. The kit carries the manufacturer part number 4S-010-013S and represents the pre‑grouping era of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway.

The model reproduces the LBSCR Class A1 and A1X “Terrier” locomotives, originally designed by William Stroudley and built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works. The real locomotives served on main lines before being displaced by larger engines and the LBSCR electrification scheme, later working on branch lines and shunting duties until the early 1960s, with the final unit withdrawn on the Hayling Island line in Hampshire in November 1963. Ten of the original Terriers survive in preservation.

Key features include a die‑cast chassis and running plate, a detailed plastic moulded body, flickering firebox, die‑cast wheels with sprung centre driving wheels for improved electrical pickup and traction, and a powerful core‑less motor. The model is DCC and DCC Sound ready, with a removable body exposing a NEXT‑18 socket and a pre‑fitted 15 × 8 × 8 mm speaker delivering Dapol’s own recording of unit 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway. RealDrive braking control is provided on factory‑fitted sound versions.

Enhancements over the 2021 release comprise a new cab with solid roof, etched coal rails, added weight in the coal bunker, modified smokebox weight, an upgraded speaker for higher sound quality, a new stay‑alive circuit, and easier access for DCC fitting. The tooling supports various A1, A1X and IOW variants, including two cab/bunker types and two smokebox/boiler options, with appropriate wooden or metal brake rigging.
